A totally new tv channel was born in 1990. It’s name was TV4 and it was going to be a Swedish and Norwegian tv channel like the TV3 channel was at the time. Here we have gathered some unique clips from the very first years when the TV4 logo had a different look to it. It was a time when it only broadcasted few hours in the evening also.
The main place for the headquarters of TV4 was in Sweden, with the Norwegian part changing and by 1992 the Swedish and Norwegian versions of TV4 looked quite different. First the main ident got a different theme music to it for the Norwegian version and then later on just 3-4 days before total closure of it. The Norwegian TV4 version got a totally new logo even. So, there were big plans for Norway but it didn’t go well. The Swedish version of TV4 lives on even today. It is the richest commercial TV channel in Sweden. Check out below on how it all began.
The very first TV4 logo that was shown from 1990 to 1992 is the one that you see on this page. It was the most iconic logo for the tv channel, however TV4 almost lost it even in Sweden too. Many thought that TV4 wouldn’t survive at all, but the Swedish version did changes that made the channel more and more profitable.
TV4 started broadcasting terrestrially on March 2, 1992
Here you can watch the ending sequence that TV4 had on 18th of February 1992. TV4 didn’t have much to show at that time, but this trend was settled in all of the Scandinavian countries at the time. After the demise of Sky Channel, it would take more than 10 years for the established tv channels in Scandinavia to get the same time program schedule. Sky Channel broadcasted from 7.30 to 2.00 in the week and the same in the weekends. Our national tv channels however began their broadcast around 17.00-18.00 and they all ended their broadcast around midnight. The same was for the Scandinavian TV3 and the Swedish-Norwegian TV4. The Scandinavian culture at that time just didn’t allow any tv channel to broadcast anything during the mornings and daytime. People simply didn’t watch tv back then they thought and that’s why all of the tv channels except for the premium movie channels started around 17.00-18.00.
On March 2nd 1992, TV4 began broadcasting terrestrially. In that case they also changed their logo totally. It was created by TV4’s graphic designer Tina Eriksson in cooperation with TV4’s illustrator Mette Camp and John Ridgeway of Novocom. These colourful idents meant that TV4 got a much brighter look. The design was way more fresh, however when we look at TV4 now compared to back then. We often think of TV4 first logo as a better one. What do you think?

One of the keys for making a tv channel survive is to keep itself to a logo or something that people remembers. The 4 number have always been the same since the start and meant that even if TV4 have changed the design around their 4 number in the logo. They haven’t changed the 4 numbers design at all. Same with TV2 in Norway, CNN, NBC etc. The most successful tv channels today that have managed to last for long time is those keeping their logo for what its worth. If you change too much, you will never get the personality. TV3 in Scandinavia is such an example. When TV3 didn’t change so much on their design between 1987 and 1993, the channel had a huge popularity. Then out of the blue, a CEO thinks its time for a change. But what she or he doesn’t think of is if people will continue to watch?
TV4 is for sure a channel that had a rough start, but is now the biggest commercial tv channel in Sweden.
